<p>Many factors influence how we think about money. From our employment status to our education levels. Even our gender and our race. And at J.P. Morgan Wealth Management, we wanted to take a deeper dive into that. So we conducted the 2020 Women and Investing Study, an online survey of 1,375 women investors back in October 2020.</p>

<p>All participants confirmed as having investable assets of 150,000 to 5 million plus. So we took a look at how affluent Black and Latinx women develop their investing savvy. And one thing was clear: the foundation their families created for them left a lasting impact on their ability to grow their wealth.</p>

<p>Importantly, according to our survey, affluent Black and Latinx female investors say their parents oak more openly and more favorably about the importance of investing compared to their white counterparts. Pretty interesting, right? Well, that's just the beginning.</p>

<p>Why does investing matter?</p>
<h2>Kira:</h2>
<p>Investing is key to building wealth over time. But there is a segment of the population that has not been participating in investing. Only 55 percent of Black Americans compared to 71 percent of white Americans participate in stock market investments.</p>

<p>So, what is one of the main characteristics of affluent Black and Latinx female investors who are taking advantage of market opportunities to grow their wealth?</p>

<p>Foundational Upbringing: Raising the next generation in a household to understand the importance of investing.</p>
<h2>Kira:</h2>
<p>61 percent of affluent Black and Latinx women said conversations about the importance of investing were part of their upbringing compared to 55 percent of affluent white women.</p>

<p>This shows that an early introduction to investing is an important factor for future affluence in Black and Latinx households. The parents didn't just talk about investing; they took action for their children. 84 percent of affluent Black and Latinx women surveyed had savings or investing accounts established for them as children compared to 78 percent of affluent white women.</p>

<p>We found that 1 in 4 affluent Black and Latinx women house three or more of these accounts today.</p>

<p>Family ties went strong in the Black and Latinx communities and the impact of COVID further underlined the importance of family financial wellbeing.</p>

<p>This insight is a full-circle moment for affluent Black and Latinx women. The exposure to investing at an early age, coupled with the savings and investing accounts that their parents set up for them, would set the foundation to enable those same women to help their family financially years down the road.</p>
