She strikes a pose.

Lauren Simmons:

Please welcome Cori Murray.

On screen:

Graphic overlay with text appears

On screen:

How I Got The Bag

Cori Murray:

I got where I am today because when I was a young girl, I had a dream about telling stories and I really only wanted to tell them in magazines.

On screen:

Woman in blue silky long sleeved dress standing in front of a wall shelf of handbags and a contextual graphic with text and a multicolored bar appears

On screen:

Cori Murray

Writer & Editor

Cori Murray:

So after college, I worked really hard and I got a job at the magazine of my dreams, Essence.

Cori Murray:

I found my passion in covering entertainment news.

Cori Murray:

So when it was time for me to leave, I had left with such warmth and so many resources that I knew I could step out on my own.

Note:

Pink and orange Graphic transition

Lauren Simmons:

Cori, you've been such an important part of culture for so long.

Lauren Simmons:

You do so much to amplify the stories of others, but I'm excited to talk about you today.

Lauren Simmons:

You were part of the Essence family for more than 20 years.

Lauren Simmons:

That comes with a certain sense of stability.

Lauren Simmons:

What kind of conversations were you having with yourself when you decided to strike out on your own?

Cori Murray:

Thank you for that.

Cori Murray:

I would say the first thing I really had to be honest with myself was about how much money do I have saved to do this?

Cori Murray:

Because, while a lot of my colleagues who were leaving, they were leaving to go to bigger jobs, bigger salaries, but that wasn't happening for me.

Cori Murray:

I was like, am I going to just sit here and not take a chance on myself because someone else is not tapping me on the shoulder and saying, come here?

Lauren Simmons:

Yeah.

Cori Murray:

I was really ready to make a pivot.

Cori Murray:

We actually did a story called The Power of the Pivot where we profiled three women who had really just sat up one day and said, I want a different life.

Cori Murray:

One story in particular really hit me was the story of Bevy Smith, who she now has this catchphrase, it gets greater later.

Lauren Simmons:

Yeah.

Cori Murray:

She said she had just landed in Milan for Fashion Week.

Cori Murray:

She was in some fancy Italian hotel, laid out on these very expensive Italian sheets, and she cried because she was unhappy.

Cori Murray:

She wasn't doing what her life's purpose was.

Cori Murray:

I literally started crying, editing her story, 2 o'clock in the morning, working from home because we're in the throes of the pandemic.

Cori Murray:

I was like, I've got to change my life.

Cori Murray:

I want a different life for myself.

Cori Murray:

But I said, I've got to get ready.

On screen:

A purple graphic with pink text slides in and the text reads:

On screen:

Stay tuned for more with our J.P. Morgan Wealth Management Advisor

Cori Murray:

And that meant saving money because I was like, if I don't have a job to go to, I want to be able to live comfortably.

Cori Murray:

I'm going to be completely honest.

Cori Murray:

I am in a two-parent household, but I am the breadwinner.

Lauren Simmons:

Okay.

Cori Murray:

And that is in itself, sometimes it's challenging, but it also lets me know I've got to keep us where we have a cushion to get us through.

Cori Murray:

Especially now that I'm a full-time freelancer, some months I work and some months I don't, so whatever I'm making, I have to make sure it's stretched out.

Cori Murray:

And I also didn't want to disrupt our lifestyle too much.

Cori Murray:

I mean, yes, we're probably not going out to eat as much.

Lauren Simmons:

Yeah.

Cori Murray:

Little things we've had to change a bit, but we all go to sleep at night knowing that the lights are not going to get turned off, the mortgage is paid, the bills are paid.

Cori Murray:

There hasn't been any disruption.

Cori Murray:

And that for me, it's very basic because I grew up in a home that was very much different.

Cori Murray:

Sometimes for me, it is just keeping the basics.

Lauren Simmons:

That's such an important point.

Lauren Simmons:

You have made a career being in community with Black women.

Lauren Simmons:

In your experience, how many conversations about money typically happened in these circles, if at all?

Cori Murray:

You know, it's been two groups for me.

Lauren Simmons:

Yeah.

Cori Murray:

When I've been with older women, they've been honest about how they've made their money, how they've been able to keep their money, and the importance of keeping money.

Cori Murray:

I never forget, there was an editor who was a part of a layoff.

Cori Murray:

This was when I was really young.

Cori Murray:

We were all in her office crying like, oh my God, whatever, we're going to miss you.

Cori Murray:

And she looked at us and she said, I have my money together, don't cry for me.

Lauren Simmons:

Yeah.

Cori Murray:

That stuck with me because even though she literally was losing her job, she walked out of there with confidence because she was going to be okay financially.

Cori Murray:

And I thought to myself, I want to have that kind of energy.

Cori Murray:

Because with any industry, they could walk into your office one day and say, hey, we've eliminated your position or we're shutting down, especially with publishing at the time.

Cori Murray:

So I realized I wanted to start getting ready for that moment.

Cori Murray:

I didn't want to be a Debbie Downer about it, but I just wanted to be ready.

Cori Murray:

Then, my peer circles, we were not talking about money.

Cori Murray:

We were not being transparent about our salaries.

Lauren Simmons:

And why do you think that is?

Lauren Simmons:

Because they didn't know how?

Cori Murray:

I think a part of it was, I don't want to say jealousy, but I think it was something about, well, if I'm over here making six figures and you're over here making 70, I don't want to rock the boat between us because I also don't want you to go and mess up that I'm in a higher bracket than you.

Lauren Simmons:

No.

Cori Murray:

I know, but this was sort of the energy though.

Lauren Simmons:

I hate that mindset though because I'm in the belief of what's meant for you will be for you, but also I love pay transparency because then I know that I can go there as well.

Cori Murray:

Yeah, yeah.

Lauren Simmons:

I've worked in a very male dominated space and the very few women that I've ever worked with have been so guarded about so many of their experiences with that, including pay transparency, but even just how they've scaled and what that looks like.

Lauren Simmons:

It leaves a lot of nuances of having to figure it out on your own.

Cori Murray:

No.

Lauren Simmons:

And if you do that, you end up not getting as far as you probably could if you had access to the information.

Cori Murray:

Exactly.

Lauren Simmons:

We all know how important investing is, especially when it comes to setting ourselves up for the future.

Lauren Simmons:

I just want to know how you are building wealth outside of the traditional investment strategies and savings.

Cori Murray:

I actually need help in that arena and how to do it because right now I have my own real estate, our home that we live in.

Cori Murray:

I have my IRA, I have a 401k, I have a pension.

Cori Murray:

I'm really comfortable when it comes to retirement, like I think I'll be okay.

Lauren Simmons:

Yeah.

Cori Murray:

But I would like to do some more active investing and I want to be educated properly on it.

Cori Murray:

And I want to be better about shoring up my company.

Cori Murray:

I just recently became an LLC because I wanted to take myself a little more seriously because I was like, I just don't want to be out here willy nilly as a freelance writer.

Cori Murray:

I want to start with myself as a business for my daughter.

Cori Murray:

And again, this was a part of my power of pivot, like, no, I want to be like Cori Murray, Inc.

Cori Murray:

That's my goal.

Note:

Background music plays.

On screen:

Graphic overlay in brown slides in over the two women and lands on pale pink background with darker pink decorative shapes

On screen:

The Confessional

On screen:

Cori shakes hands with man in producer’s headset as she sits in a chair in front of a multicolored square paned stained glass window as the man waves for a woman with blue and green braids who comes to fix Cori’s hair. Another man comes in to fix Cori’s mic and a woman in a green hoodie that says London comes to clap the production slate. There are two tropical potted plants in the background on either side of the window.

Cori Murray:

Hi.

Cori Murray:

Thank you for coming.

Cori Murray:

Thank you.

On screen:

A Spend I can’t resist is…

Cori Murray:

What I cannot resist spending money on is food, tacos, coffee, pastries, tapas, anything.

Cori Murray:

And the delivery service, they have my money all the time.

Cori Murray:

The thing for me that doesn't have a price are magazines.

Cori Murray:

I can buy stacks of them, especially like travel magazines because it just transports me instantly.

Cori Murray:

It's just a hug I need sometimes after I come in from a long day at work.

On screen:

I blow my budget on…

Cori Murray:

Something I always go over budget on, having a nice night at a restaurant.

Cori Murray:

And I always think I don't want the night to end.

Cori Murray:

And I have that one more cocktail, which ends into two.

Cori Murray:

That bill becomes expensive.

Lauren Simmons:

You have a lovely daughter.

Lauren Simmons:

How do you discuss money and investing with her?

On screen:

Photo of Cori’s daughter in front of a store shelf of lotions and soaps. Photo is overlaid on a background of various shades of pink and orange.

On screen:

Photo of Cori and her daughter dressed as Ice Spice and Cori is wearing a nametag denoting she is Ice Spice’s Manager. Photo is overlaid on a background of various shades of pink and orange.

Cori Murray:

Well, the first thing I have to do in discussing money with my daughter is let her know that my money is not her money. Okay?

Lauren Simmons:

Oh, that's a good one.

Lauren Simmons:

Because all kids seem to think it.

Cori Murray:

All.

Cori Murray:

And I have to let her know.

Cori Murray:

And it's something that my big daddy used to tell me all the time.

Cori Murray:

And I say to her, money does not grow on trees.

Cori Murray:

But because of the way I grew up, I do overindulge in her sometimes.

Cori Murray:

Because what we also are trying to instill in her is that you're going to need to stay smart.

On screen:

Photo of Cori’s daughter on a front stoop in front of a door. Photo is overlaid on a background of various shades of pink and orange.

Cori Murray:

Keep your grades up because you have a very expensive taste.

Cori Murray:

You have to work hard because you want nice things.

Cori Murray:

And you deserve nice things, but you have to work hard for them.

On screen:

A purple graphic with pink text slides in and the text reads:

On screen:

Stay tuned for more with our J.P. Morgan Wealth Management Advisor

Lauren Simmons:

Yeah. Your daughter is clearly such a big part of the woman you are.

Lauren Simmons:

What I want to know is, what does legacy mean to you, and what do you hope she inherits from you?

Cori Murray:

I want her to know that she can always be her own boss.

Cori Murray:

She does not have to go into some big corporation and adhere to their rules, their procedures, if she knows that she can do something on her own.

Lauren Simmons:

Yeah.

Cori Murray:

We really love to make sure that she knows she can create something as well.

Lauren Simmons:

Yep.

Cori Murray:

There was one time her dad was in Haiti working, and we came to visit him.

Cori Murray:

And he's on the phone.

Cori Murray:

He's wheeling and dealing.

Cori Murray:

And she just starts mocking him.

Cori Murray:

And I had this vision.

Cori Murray:

I was like, oh, my God.

Cori Murray:

She's going to come down here and start her own business.

Lauren Simmons:

Yeah. Yeah.

Cori Murray:

You know what I mean?

Cori Murray:

And I realized in watching us, she's really taking it in.

Cori Murray:

You think about it for the manners and that sort of thing, religion.

Cori Murray:

But I was like, no, she's watching us work.

Lauren Simmons:

Yeah.

Cori Murray:

So we are really trying to tell her that she could create an enterprise on her own.

Lauren Simmons:

Wow.

Cori Murray:

But if she does want to go in a corporation, that's fine.

Lauren Simmons:

Nothing wrong with that.

Cori Murray:

But that's what we're instilling in her, that she can create her own legacy.

Cori Murray:

And I love that for us, because we both come from families who they are -- I mean, my mother is still working.

Cori Murray:

My mother is about to be 70.

Cori Murray:

His mother literally retired, I think, in her 70s, too.

Cori Murray:

So they're literally working until the end.

Cori Murray:

And we are both two people who are entrepreneurs, something that they probably never dreamed of.

Lauren Simmons:

Incredible insight.

Lauren Simmons:

Cori, thank you so much for coming on to chat with me today.

Lauren Simmons:

So many people in our community look up to you.

Lauren Simmons:

And for me, being able to be in conversation with people who are carving out their own path is so incredible.

Cori Murray:

Thank you, Lauren.

Cori Murray:

Thank you for inviting me to this space.

Cori Murray:

I learned some things.

Cori Murray:

I have some homework to do.

Cori Murray:

And I appreciate you.

Cori Murray:

So thank you.

Lauren Simmons:

And before we wrap up today, let's get down to business with our JP Morgan Wealth Management Advisor as we break down some of those intimidating financial concepts in a segment we'd like to call Make It Make Sense.

On screen:

Pink and oragne graphic transitions. Graphic disappears to reveal woman in a gray denim blazer and black shirt. A contextual graphic with text and a multicolored bar appears

On screen:

Lanän Clark

J.P. Morgan Wealth Management Advisor

On screen:

Pink bubble graphic expands to say “Make It Make Sense” and transitions to Lauren, now wearing a red silk blouse and blue jeans, sitting across from the Lanan in the gray denim blaze in two velvety chairs against a white brick background with classy modern décor and potted plants.

Lauren Simmons:

Hey, Lanan, so excited for you to be here.

Lanan Clark:

Hello.

Lanan Clark:

Glad to be here with you.

Lauren Simmons:

All right, let's dive in.

Lauren Simmons:

One thing Cori mentioned was wanting to get more informed when it came to investing.

Lauren Simmons:

What advice do you have that people are feeling nervous about not knowing enough to get in the game?

Lanan Clark:

I love that we're starting with a place of maybe the fear of it or how I'm going to be viewed if I say something silly, all of that.

Lanan Clark:

I kind of feel like that every day.

Lanan Clark:

And I've been doing this for a very long time.

Lauren Simmons:

I love that.

Lanan Clark:

I mean, I do.

Lanan Clark:

I mean, you never know it all.

Lanan Clark:

And I think that's the beauty of it all.

Lanan Clark:

It is not my goal to know everything.

Lanan Clark:

I want to have the folks in my corner and the professionals that I know that I can go to who are walking wells of knowledge that I can say, hey, I don't know anything about X or I know very little about Y.

Lanan Clark:

Help me with that.

Lanan Clark:

When does that come into play?

Lanan Clark:

I feel no differently than our viewers and everybody in the community that's like, I don't know where to start.

Lanan Clark:

That's okay.

Lanan Clark:

Just start.

Lauren Simmons:

Yes.

Lanan Clark:

Ask the very first question and then ask the second.

Lanan Clark:

It's what I do.

Lanan Clark:

I like literally still do that.

Lauren Simmons:

I love that.

Lauren Simmons:

At what age would you advise your clients to start talking to their kids about money management?

Lanan Clark:

Yes.

Lanan Clark:

Yes, just yes.

Lanan Clark:

Yes.

Lanan Clark:

All ages.

Lanan Clark:

Yes.

Lanan Clark:

The answer is yes and yesterday.

Lanan Clark:

Yes.

Lanan Clark:

There isn't an early enough time.

Lanan Clark:

I can tell you in our own family, I've got two babies and I'm sure they're thrilled that I'm always calling them babies.

Lanan Clark:

They are 20 and 18.

Lauren Simmons:

Oh.

Lanan Clark:

I've got two babies and the truth is we've been working with them about their money, certainly not talking about stocks and bonds, not investing, but talking to them about money management.

Lanan Clark:

You know, stuff comes in, if you spend it, it goes out, which means nothing is saved over here.

Lanan Clark:

Deal with that.

Lanan Clark:

We've been talking with our kids about that since they were probably six or seven.

Lanan Clark:

And then as they get a little bit older, we can talk about strategies to do something more and let your money work with you and for you.

Lanan Clark:

We have to talk to our kids like immediately.

Lanan Clark:

The moment children can understand the concept of wanting, that's the time you need to be starting to talk to your kids about money.

Lauren Simmons:

Exactly.

Lanan Clark:

And the want in our culture comes quick.

Lauren Simmons:

Yeah.

Lauren Simmons:

These days, I imagine so many people are planning for the unfortunate possibility of career interruptions.

Lauren Simmons:

How can people make sure they're financially prepared for something like that?

Lanan Clark:

You know, that's a big one.

Lanan Clark:

I have to tell you, that's a big one.

Lanan Clark:

And the interruptions can come at any time, sometimes planned, sometimes not.

Lanan Clark:

Sometimes you have one bread earner that's like, okay, I think I want to go home and be with kids, or I just don't feel well anymore and I'm exhausted, or I'm dealing with anxiety, or I mean, it could be anything.

Lanan Clark:

The biggest thing, it really is about that money management again.

Lanan Clark:

If X is coming in, how much do I need to make sure that our lifestyle is covered?

Lanan Clark:

I shouldn't say lifestyle, that our needs are covered.

Lanan Clark:

I should be careful about lifestyle, that our needs are covered, and being able to separate the needs from the wants from the wishes, right?

Lanan Clark:

So you need to be able to have X amount of dollars in this pot over here.

Lanan Clark:

We like to give advice to say, to make sure you've got six months' worth of rainy day.

Lauren Simmons:

Cori mentioned that she's the financial head of the household.

Lauren Simmons:

As the culture around this shifts, and more women find themselves in this position, what guidance would you lend to these women?

Lanan Clark:

Listen, you just have to get everybody involved.

Lanan Clark:

Just getting everybody involved in here's where we are, we can do these things, we might be able to do some of these things, these things we cannot do.

Lanan Clark:

As a family, what are going to be our non-negotiables?

Lanan Clark:

Get everybody involved, your partner, your children, let everybody be a part of and have ownership in the conversation.

Lauren Simmons:

Thank you so much, Lanan.

Note:

Music plays in the background

Lauren Simmons:

Again, I am just loving these conversations.

Lauren Simmons:

Thank you so much for just being a ray of sunshine.

Lanan Clark:

Thank you for that.

On screen:

Pink and orange graphic transition to Lauren in a green silky shirt and blue jeans back in the loft setting and yellow chair.

Lauren Simmons:

And with that, we're closing the book on this episode of With the Bag to Match.

Lauren Simmons:

Again, I wanna say thank you to Cori Murray for sharing more of her story and strategy with us today.

Lauren Simmons:

As always, I wanna shout out our J.P. Morgan Wealth Management Advisor, Lanan, for Making It All Make Sense.

Lauren Simmons:

And she does so incredibly well.

Lauren Simmons:

Before we go, I want us to all remember that the bag is far more than just a fashion statement.

Lauren Simmons:

It's a symbol of financial empowerment.

Lauren Simmons:

Don't forget to join us again for our next episode as we talk about building your best financial life With The Bag To Match.

Note:

A bold disclaimer appears on a black screen and reads:

On screen:

J.P.
