Unlike changing one's last name after marriage or divorce, informing banks or creditors of a change to one's first name does not automatically cause credit reporting agencies to update that person's credit file. This creates a cascading effect in several areas of a person's financial life – and it goes beyond borrowing. Credit reports are frequently checked during common financial processes, including the pricing of insurance, establishing utility services, and even opening an investment account.

Transgender individuals should consider directly contacting each creditor and credit reporting agency, and following each organization's specific procedures and documentation requirements for updating their name. What's more, they should consider checking frequently to see that the changes have actually been made and do not negatively impact their credit score.
