Laying the foundation now can help you build a more secure financial future.

On screen:

Blueprints appear, displaying plans for two houses.

Narrator:

One tool to help you prepare is an Individual Retirement Account, also known as an IRA. IRAs are designed to help you invest for retirement and can offer tax benefits to help give you a boost along the way. The two main types are Traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs. For both, you can typically make annual contributions subject to eligibility requirements and limits set by the IRS.

On screen:

Construction vehicles deliver home-building materials to properties marked: "Traditional IRAs" and "Roth IRAs."

Narrator:

With a traditional IRA, you may be able to deduct your contributions from your income, possibly reducing the amount of taxes you pay, but typically your distributions are taxed as ordinary income.

On screen:

Construction vehicles build a classic "custom cape" style home on the property labeled "Traditional IRA."

Narrator:

With a Roth IRA, on the other hand, your contributions can only be made with after tax dollars, but you won’t have to pay taxes on withdrawals, as long as they meet certain IRS requirements.

On screen:

Construction vehicles build a modular "contemporary" style home on the property labeled "Roth IRA."

Narrator:

And with both options, you don’t have to pay taxes on any investment growth or income while your money is in your IRA, helping you to earn more over time!

On screen:

Both houses increase in size.

Narrator:

In either type of IRA, you can generally buy investments like ETFs, mutual funds, stocks and bonds. You can pick these investments on your own or you can choose to have your account handled by an investment professional.

On screen:

Furniture appears inside a house. The pieces of furniture (labeled "Stocks," "Mutual Funds," "ETFs," and "Bonds") indicate that these types of investments can go into the different accounts.

Narrator:

No matter which option you choose, the most important part is to start investing as soon as you can for retirement!

On screen:

Then, decorative landscaping and trees appear outside the homes.

On screen:

J.P. Morgan.

Note:

Legal disclosures appear.

On screen:

Investing involves market risk including possible loss of principal, and there is no guarantee that investment objectives will be achieved.

Asset allocation/diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against a loss.

Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.

The price of equity securities may rise or fall due to the changes in the broad market or changes in a company’s financial condition, sometimes rapidly or unpredictably. Equity securities are subject to ‘stock market risk’ meaning that stock prices in general may decline over short or extended periods of time.

In general, the bond market is volatile and bond prices rise when interest rates fall and vice versa. Longer term securities are more prone to price fluctuation than shorter term securities. Any fixed income security sold or redeemed prior to maturity may be subject to substantial gain or loss. Dependable income is subject to the credit risk of the issuer of the bond. If an issuer defaults no future income payments will be made.

The market prices of ETFs can fluctuate as a result of several factors, such as security-specific factors or general investor sentiment. Therefore investors should be aware of the prospect of market fluctuations and the impact it may have on the market price. When investing in mutual funds or exchange-traded and index funds, please consider the investment objectives, risks, charges, and expenses associated with the funds before investing. You may obtain a fund's prospectus by contacting your investment professional or visiting the fund company's website. The prospectus contains this and other information, which should be carefully read before investing.

This video and its content have been developed for J.P.
